My friend, Sandra, wanted me to watch this. I did. And here’s my running commentary.

  1. I’ll comment as I watch it. First, allowing citizens to own and carry handguns is a Constitutional right, not evidence that Arizona legislators are smoking meth.
  2. And the requirement for legal immigrants to carry documentation? Already a Federal requirement.
  3. United States Code 8 § 1304 (e):
Every alien, eighteen years of age and over, shall at all times carry with him and have in his personal possession any certificate of alien registration or alien registration receipt card issued to him pursuant to subsection (d) of this section. Any alien who fails to comply with the provisions of this subsection shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall upon conviction for each offense be fined not to exceed $100 or be imprisoned not more than thirty days, or both.

  4. The reason the bill includes a provision allowing citizens to sue if the law is not enforced? Sanctuary cities like San Francisco who openly state that they will not enforce federal immigration laws. Why is it unreasonable to expect a city to comply with the law?
  5. Tom Tancredo? No, he does not think the law goes to far. He stated that he does not want the police to use it as an excuse for racial profiling. From Huff Po:
  6. “Tancredo says that he does NOT believe that the Arizona bill “would allow police to simply pull someone over because of the color of their skin,” and that his quote to KDVR has been taken out of context. He reiterated his support for the legislation.”

  7. What would law enforcement consider suspicious? How about running in a group away from a stopped car? How about not being able to produce a drivers license? How about not being able to provide ID when involved in a public altercation?
  8. “They’ll find something else to arrest me on.”
  9. Funny, but not true. Spend a few hours listening to law enforcement tell you about interviewing people involved in traffic accidents, not getting proof of identity, and then having to release them on a promise-to-appear notice and knowing they will never actually show up in court.

  10. And the only reason we can’t depend on the drivers license alone is because eleven states think its a good idea to issue licenses to illegal aliens.
  11. Okay, done now. It’s The Daily Show, and it’s usually spot on with the news and the humor. But this one is just funny… not so accurate.
